Gingivitis is a mild gum disease that causes red, swollen, and bleeding gums. If not treated with prompt dental care, it can turn into periodontitis, a more serious gum disease. In this stage, the inflammation gets worse and starts to damage the bone and tissues that support your teeth. As the disease progresses, the gums pull away from the teeth, forming pockets that trap bacteria and cause infection. At this point, your dentist or periodontist might suggest surgery to fix serious gum issues. Let’s find out about the amount of time a gum graft surgery takes.

Average Time Duration of a Gum Graft Procedure

Gum graft surgery usually takes about 30 minutes to one hour for a single area. If more than one area needs treatment or if the case is more complicated, it can take one to two hours. The time depends on how many teeth are involved and how large the graft needs to be. The type of graft also affects how long it takes. Some types, like connective tissue or free gingival grafts, need more careful steps to remove and place the tissue.

The severity of gum recession can also change the duration of a gum graft procedure. More damage means more tissue and prep work, which can make the surgery longer. Other things, like the patient’s overall health, their healing capacity, and their specific mouth structure, can make the surgeon go more slowly. The surgeon’s skill and experience also affect how quickly the procedure is done.

What Happens During a Gum Graft Surgery?

During gum graft surgery, a periodontist or oral surgeon treats receding gums by adding tissue to cover the exposed tooth roots and restore the gum line. Here’s how the procedure usually goes:

  1. Numbing the Area: The dentist uses local anesthesia to numb both the area with gum recession and the spot where tissue will be taken from. It is usually taken from the roof of the mouth, so you might not feel pain during the procedure.
  2. Taking the Tissue: The surgeon removes a small piece of healthy gum tissue. They can do it by:
    • Cutting a flap in the roof of the mouth and taking tissue from underneath (called a connective tissue graft)
    • Taking a thin piece directly from the surface of the roof of the mouth (free gingival graft)
    • Using tissue from the nearby gum (pedicle graft)
    • Having donor tissue or a special tissue substitute
  3. Placing the Graft: The new tissue is carefully placed over the receded area and stitched in place. Sometimes the gum around the area is loosened a bit to help fit the graft better.
  4. Closing Up: The donor site (usually the roof of the mouth) is stitched closed, and the graft area is also secured with stitches. The dentist may apply protective coverings or give you an antibacterial rinse to help with healing.

How Long Does Gum Graft Surgery Take to Heal?

Gum graft surgery usually takes about one to two weeks for the first stage of healing, when swelling and discomfort slowly go away. However, it can take up to three months for the grafted tissue to fully heal and blend with the surrounding gums. Most of the healing happens during the first month.

Closing Note

In short, the duration of a gum graft procedure depends on the type and complexity of the procedure. If you need gum surgery, talk to an experienced periodontist. They can explain what to expect, how long it may take, and answer any questions you have about your specific case.
