Clinical Research

The research department at Perio Health Professionals has been fortunate to be involved in a variety of diverse research projects since 1989.  What started with an occasional collaboration between Dr. McGuire and several other nationally respected periodontists, who were also innovative leaders in their field, led to the formation of an organized research institute. The McGuire Institute was founded by Dr. McGuire and Dr. Scheyer in 2010. Under the guidance of Dr. McGuire and Dr. Scheyer, the institute has grown to involve 17 practice sites throughout the United States.  They have now overseen and participated in 53 projects, providing high-quality research, which has resulted in several landmark clinical trials.  As one of the seventeen sites, the research department at Perio Health Professionals has participated in all these trials.

Over the years, our research department at Perio Health Professionals has grown.  Dr. Andrew Rossi, who has added expertise and enthusiasm to our team, joined Dr. McGuire and Dr. Scheyer in 2019.  The department now includes our three doctors, two hygienists who serve as clinical coordinators, an international interning dentist, and data-management assistants.  Our past trials have explored many focus areas, from biologic tissue engineering to implant placement to esthetic enhancement.  Some of our more current trials have looked at a new type of implant, laser periodontal therapy, improved use of enhanced healing material for soft tissue grafts, as well as the effect of an artificial intelligence app on oral hygiene compliance and long-term oral health.

Along with the important aspect of gaining experience in cutting-edge technology and treatment modalities, we find it very rewarding to be able to provide treatment at no cost to our patients who qualify for studies. We enjoy collaborating with referring dentists to provide treatment their patients might not otherwise be able to afford.

We post upcoming studies on our website and look forward to continuing contribution to the improvement of dental treatments and education, making a difference in dentistry throughout the world through research.
