Sedative Q & A

Perio Health Professionals

What is sedation dentistry?

Taking care of your teeth goes beyond brushing and flossing. However, while dental anxieties and phobias often interfere with getting the care you need, the prospect of making an appointment at Perio Health Professionals doesn’t need to scare you. If it does though, we have a warm blanket help you feel comfortable and relaxed throughout your visit, and there’s a number of sedation techniques to help, including:

Laughing gas

Laughing gas is one of the most common types of sedation used in dental offices. Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is an inhalation analgesia that is effective at reducing your anxiety about a dental procedure. Nitrous oxide does not put you to sleep, and is extremely safe. It may be used in combination with local anesthesia, making many treatments virtually painless.

Enteral sedation

Enteral sedation is a pill or liquid taken orally, and often is combined with nitrous oxide. Enteral sedation allows you to stay relaxed during your procedure without anxiety.

IV sedation

Intravenous (IV) sedation is deeper sedation that requires the medication be injected directly into your vein. While you remain relaxed, you are less aware of the procedure being performed.

How does sedation dentistry work?

Most forms of sedation dentistry allow you to feel a deep state of relaxation while remaining aware of your surroundings and able to communicate. However, you often come away with little or no memory of your treatment.

While you are under sedation, the doctors use precautions and monitor your vital signs, including your blood pressure, breathing, and heart rate, as safety is the top concern at Perio Health Professionals. In fact, a board-certified anesthesiologist is available at your request for your safety.

Recovery from a procedure requiring anesthesia varies from patient to patient. However, drowsiness often prevails. If your procedure requires anesthesia, you should arrange for a driver to drop you off and pick you up after your procedure.

Why use sedation dentistry?

Sedation isn’t just for people with severe anxiety. It also makes visits easier for those:

  • With temporomandibular disorders and neuromuscular disorders
  • Undergoing multiple or complex procedures
  • Who have trouble becoming numb

The specialists at Perio Health Professionals in Houston offer some form of sedation for almost all the procedures they perform. Based on each patient's unique requirements, sedation will be either performed by a CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist), an MD anesthesiologist, or one of the periodontists at Perio Health Professionals.Call or reach out to us via e-mail to schedule an appointment to discuss any concerns or fears you have.
