Gums are supposed to hug teeth tightly, like a turtleneck sweater snugly fitting your neck. If they don’t and you notice a loose gum flap between teeth, it’s time to act. It can be a first hint of gum disease, starting as a harmless gum flap.

What Does a Loose Gum Flap Look Like?

A loose gum flap between teeth, also called a “loose papilla,” is a small, triangle-shaped piece of gum that isn’t firmly attached to the bone underneath. This usually happens because of gum disease, which creates pockets between the teeth and gums. These pockets trap bacteria, leading to more irritation and swelling.

Causes of Loose Gum Flap Formation Between Teeth

A loose gum flap between teeth is often a sign of untreated gum disease, but other factors can also cause it:

  • Smoking and Tobacco Use: Using tobacco is a major risk for gum problems. Smoking reduces blood flow to the gums, weakens the immune system, and makes the gums less stable.
  • Trauma or Injury: Gum injuries, such as those caused by an accident or brushing too hard, can irritate the tissue and loosen the gum flap.
  • Poor-fitting Dental Appliances: Braces, bridges, or other dental devices that don’t fit well can press on the gums, causing irritation and loosening the gum flap.
  • Medical Conditions: Health issues like diabetes can make it harder for the body to fight infections, leading to gum problems and loosened tissue.

How Does Gum Disease Progress?

Healthy gums are firm, don’t bleed, and aren’t swollen. But gum disease can make them red or purple, swollen, and prone to bleeding. If not treated, it can damage the jawbone and even cause tooth loss. Dr. Andrew Rossi of Perio Health Professionals provides effective treatments for early to advanced gum diseases. He is a native Houstonian with a Master of Dental Science in Periodontics from the University of Texas Health Science Center.

Gum disease develops slowly, and most people don’t feel pain, especially in the early stages. That’s why it’s important to recognize the signs early. There are four stages of gum disease:

  • Gingivitis: This is the first stage. Gums become red and swollen and may bleed when you brush or floss. There’s no bone damage yet, so with proper care, it can be fully reversed.
  • Mild Periodontitis: Bacteria move under the gums, affecting the bone. Gums may start to pull away from teeth, creating pockets where bacteria and plaque collect, making them hard to clean.
  • Moderate Periodontitis: If untreated, bacteria begin damaging the bone, tissues, and ligaments supporting the teeth. You may notice bad breath, pus around the gums, and possibly some pain.
  • Advanced Periodontitis: As the disease progresses, more bone is lost, making teeth loose. Without treatment, teeth can fall out.

Treatment for a Loose Gum Flap Between Teeth

If you notice a loose gum flap or any changes in your gum health, it’s important to see a dentist. Start by booking an oral exam and professional cleaning. During the exam, the dentist will figure out what’s causing the problem and suggest the right treatment. The following are the common treatments for loose gums:

  • Scaling and Root Planing: This deep cleaning removes plaque and tartar from the teeth and roots to help the gums reattach.
  • Periodontal Surgery: In advanced cases, surgery may be needed. This could include flap surgery to reduce deep pockets or bone grafts to replace lost bone.
  • Antibiotic Therapy: Antibiotics are often used to fight infections and help the gums heal.

Wrapping Up

The loose gum flap between teeth appears completely harmless. However, taking it lightly is a major mistake people often make. It can be the beginning of gum disease that can wreak havoc on your oral health in no time.
